Reception home learning for the weeks beginning the 4th and 11th of May

Fish Words! The whole set of fish words are here, So you can keep learning!

Week 4 (11th May - 15th May)

It's your family's turn this week! The people who care for you in your family home and in your extended family. We may not be able to visit right now, or they may live far away, but they still can be heroes for you! Do they teach you recipes from when they were children? Or do they look after you on school holidays so your grown ups can go to work? And how can you be a hero for them?

Ask your child to draw a picture of the people who live in their house. If they share time across two houses, draw who lives in each house. Don’t forget family who live apart from us! Nanny and Grandad or Aunts and Uncles. Can they label their family members using their phonics knowledge?

Sing Nursery Rhymes and songs together. Add in actions and change the words. Can children think of different rhyming words to add in? Repeat old favourites and learn new rhymes. You can find an A-Z of nursery rhymes here

Using toys or household objects practice splitting them into 2 even groups (halving) using the “one for you one for me” method.

Then count each group

-are they the same amount?

-frame these numbers as a sentence:

“half of 6 is….”

Look at a selection of family photographs and discuss the changes over time.

- Show your child a photograph of them as a baby, a 1 year old, a 2 year old. What could they do at that age? What can they do now that they couldn’t do then?

- Are there any black and white photographs? Why are these photographs black and white? Do they show older family members when they were younger? Talk about how life was different then.

Practice name writing. Write the family’s names and write what you like about each of them. How do they help you and look after you?

Don’t forget your animals!

Pets are important for giving us love and friendship, and we look after them.

Daily phonics - Practice the sounds your child is working on and blend words. This can be oral blending (e.g. spoken out loud c-a-t) or written if appropriate.

Talk about family ages and birthdays. Sing the days of the week song and the months of the year song! What day of the month are the birthdays in your family?

What ages are they?

Can you order your family members from oldest to youngest or vice versa?

Sort out the clean clothes. Who do they belong to? Can they deliver them to the right place in the house? Pair up socks. Can they match the patterns/ colours? Can they count in twos to work out how many there are all together? Peg clothes on the airer (this will support children to develop hand strength which will impact on their writing).

Practice forming the letters of the alphabet. Use these to write a word beginning with each letter.

Make a phonics splat game where you write cvc words, like chuck/ship/thick etc and you have to splat a word then read it OR say a word and your child has to identify and splat it as fast as they can!

Practise counting backwards from 20. This can be done through playing hide and seek, singing number songs, chanting, board games etc.

Have a family picnic. Lay out a blanket in the living room or garden. Can children make sure

everyone has a plate, fork, spoon, cup? How many do we need all together? Give your child a

selection of food and ask them to share it fairly between everyone? If there is one left over

what could we do?

Ask your child to write out the tricky words from phase 3 on pieces of paper and put them into a sentence

With your child, look in magazines, newspapers and books for the tricky words they are currently learning. They could use a highlighter to highlight in magazines and newspapers.

Play board games like snakes and ladders that need a dice for number recognition. Count on the correct number of spaces.

Use play dough to make your family members- Use readymade play dough or make your own using this recipe:

2 cups of plain flour, one cup of salt, a tablespoon of oil, a cup of water (add gradually), a couple of drops of food colouring (optional), a teaspoon of cream of tartar (optional, but will make it last longer)

Ask what you can do to help in your house. Write a list of helpful things you could do to look after people in your home and give your loved ones a nice surprise!

Lay the table for your family for dinner- How many people are there? How many knives, forks, cups do you need? Write out name cards for everyone in your family to show them where to sit. Write a menu to let them know what is for dinner that night. Roleplay as a waiter/waitress. What would everyone like in their sandwiches for lunch? What drinks?

Week 3 - All about where you live!

This week we will be exploring the local community and the people who are key workers, looking after us and making sure that jobs get done! Choose an activity from each section each day and look under the sections for extra resources and activities.

Design your dream house. What rooms would you like to have in your house? Encourage children to be as imaginative as they can (e.g. a cinema room, a chocolate room). Can they label their house using their phonics knowledge?

Exploring farm animals - how many animals do you know? How many have legs/wings/fins? Read the lesson ideas for 'What the ladybird heard' in the eweeks maths activities. With your pictures or toys, can you count the legs? It's quicker if you can count in 2s! 

Support your child to create a map or cross section of their home. Can they name all of the rooms? An adult could hide an object in a room and mark where it is on the child’s map. Can they use their map to find the hidden object? Label each room using phonics knowledge.

Think carefully about your day. Everyday we need people to do key jobs for us. We need people to take our rubbish away and bring us fresh food. We need people to work in shops and clean the towns.

Can you describe them using nouns and adjectives?

Ie the nurse wears blue

The bin truck is bug and green etc

How many doubles within 10? Which numbers cannot be shared equally between 2?

Look for the numbers on the doors of houses. Do the numbers get bigger or smaller as you go up and down the street?

Gather an object from each room and challenge your child to return them to the appropriate room e.g. toothbrush from the bathroom, teddy from their bedroom. Hide objects around the room and describe where it is using nouns and adjectives e.g “it’s under something red” Can your child hide an object and describe where it is for you to find?

Send your child on a sound hunt around the house. Can they find and record all of the items that make sounds? (e.g. hairdryer, TV, fridge, microwave, phone)

Positional language & maps – draw a map of the farm and discuss a route under, around, over, behind, left, right, beside, between.

Practise counting backwards from 20. This can be done through playing hide and seek, singing number songs, chanting, board games etc.

Using lego, duplo, wooden blocks or junk modelling, make a model of your house. Can they add in the rooms and doors in the right places? Write labels to match each room on pieces of paper. Build your dream house out of construction blocks.

Ask your child to write out the tricky words from phase 3 on pieces of paper and turn them into a pairs game

With your child, look in magazines, newspapers and books for the tricky words they are currently learning. They could use a highlighter to highlight in magazines and newspapers.

Use the ‘Tens Frames’ or ‘Five Frames’ on this game and practise recognising amounts. This can also be done by reading a dice when playing board games, playing with cards, identifying how many food items on the plate etc.

Gather a collection of household objects e.g. fork, cup, toothbrush, teddy bear, book and show your child. Use a scarf/ material as a blindfold and pass your child one of the objects. Can they figure out what it is through touch alone? Give clues if they are struggling. Swap roles and ask your child to give you an object to figure out.

Complete sentences describing objects around the home.

Use size/colour/texture words (adjectives).

 

Don’t forget sentences need a capital letter, finger spaces and full stops!

Explore the properties of shapes – describe the animals and buildings on your farm using size, colour, shape adjectives.

Explore the textures around your house. Can children find something rough, smooth, bumpy. They could take a wax rubbing of each texture (Lay a piece of paper over the top and rub over with the side of a crayon). You could continue this into the garden.
