In 2011 - 12 the Government introduced Pupil Premium funding which was allocated to schools to support 2 different groups of children:
1. Those from low income families (known as those eligible for Free School Meals)
2. Those who have been looked after continuously for more than 6 months (including those who are adopted or under a special guardianship order)

Schools are free to spend the funding for the benefit of these children as they see fit, but are held accountable for it and required to publish on their school website how it has been used and its impact.
