General Information

PE days: Monday and Friday 

Please wear weather appropriate PE kit to school on these days. 

Reading books: books will be changed on a Monday and Thursday. 

Please try to read every night. Please write in the reading record the page number read to. If you have not finished a book, we will send the book home again. 

Please ensure books are in school every day as staff read with the children each morning, and with the help of our reading volunteers, we use any other available opportunities to read with the children. 

Non-decodable reading books: TBC

The children will have an opportunity to pick a book from the book corner to bring home every Friday. This is a non-decodable book, not matched to the children's reading level. This book is to promote reading for pleasure and give the children opportunity to choose their own book. Please read this book with your child and allow them to share and enjoy. It is not necessarily intended for the child to read this independently.

Supporting your Child in Year 5

Please see below some strategies for helping your child in Year 5. You will also find further information in the curriculum pages. 

• Please try to listen to your child read every night - just a page or two will make a big difference. Remind them to 'say the sounds and read the words' and reread sentences to build up fluency and confidence. 
• Share and discuss knowledge organisers. Practice key vocabulary and talk about learning. Feel free to get them to share what they know and have learned in creative and imaginative ways. 
• Visit LetterJoin to practice forming letters, using key vocabulary from our learning and for fun.
• Practice spellings on purple mash for regular exposure to different spelling rules and strategies.
• Times table work will take place weekly, encourage practice, singing songs taught and rolling fingers to help embed them. There will also be activities set on Mathletics which will either supplement in class learning or provide opportunities for revision of previously visited topics and strategies.
